Hi! I'm Danielle Bennett

Historian and Museum Professional.

I believe in the power of museums to create joyful and personal learning experiences and I think that history needs more of those transformative moments that provoke curiosity and empathy. I am about to graduate from Tufts University's MA program in History and Museum Studies where my focus (and thesis) has been on surfacing queer experiences in historic house museums. I love thinking and learning about gender and labor history, as well as telling stories from multiple perspectives. On my way to museums, I collected a lot of experiences that have formed my work ethic, project management skills, and belief in the power of community.

I am looking for my next project at an institution that cares about building ambitious and compelling exhibits and programming and developing relationships with the community around it. Below, you can learn about my past experiences and see projects and presentations I've worked on. Get in touch via the Contact form if you want me on your team!

Founding Member

Sexual Harassment Working Group

  • I am proud to be a member of this advocacy organization, comprised of people who experienced or witnessed sexual harassment while working in the New York State Legislature who now advocate for safer working conditions for state employees and for workers all over New York. We have developed policy recommendations, consulted on legislation, and compelled the New York State Legislature to hold its first hearings on sexual harassment in almost 30 years.

Teaching & Program Assistant

Tufts University

  • As a Teaching Assistant for Tufts' History Department, I graded assignments, led recitations, and advised students on their work in American and European history courses.
  • I also worked as a Program Assistant for the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy where I helped put on a community genealogy workshop, did graphic design and promotion for Center events, and copyedited the Center's website for Tufts' African American Trail Project.

Curatorial Intern

New-York Historical Society

  • I am excited to have worked on New-York Historical's upcoming exhibits to commemorate Stonewall 50, opening May 2019. I also planned a rotation of the Liman Board Game collection about the Spanish American War and catalogued new acquisitions in TMS.

Visitor Experience & Social Media Manager

Alice Austen House

  • This is the place that taught me about running a small historical museum. I did a lot of things at the Austen House, including managing the Austen House's web and social media presences, and working on social media collaborations with other cultural organizations like NYC LGBT Historic Sites I also planned programming, supported events, and gave tours about Alice's life and work.

Senior Technical Support Engineer & Product Operations Specialist

Twilio, Inc.

  • At Twilio, I got to learn a lot about developer APIs, interative development, and how to provide really good customer support. I helped customers with technical issues, designed and gave trainings to team members and customers, and helped beta test products. I also worked on several diversity and inclusion projects, including the development of an internal plan for employees undergoing gender transition.

Political and Labor Organizer

New York City and New Jersey

  • I worked as an organizer on several political campaigns in New York including Eric Schneiderman's campaign for Attorney General and Andrew Cuomo's 2010 race for governor. I also worked as a media trainer and organizer for the Communication Workers of America in New Jersey, developing their social media presence and training rank and file members to use social media and blogging platforms to communicate the worker experience and why state employees needed a fair contract. This work taught me the value of multiple voices and perspectives and how important it is to bring people together to accomplish big goals.

Scheduler and Legislative Assistant

New York State Assembly

  • I worked for two New York State Assemblymembers as a scheduler and assistant, representing them at community meetings, solving constituent problems, and maintaining their correspondence. Serving the people of New York and learning about policy development and legislative proceedure was a powerful experience.
